Traveling to Ghana? Here are a few tips to guide you make the most of your trip!
- Make all travel arrangements ahead of time.
- Ensure that you have accommodation arranged.
- Most airlines give two free luggage, and you may take two extra on board at an extra cost. If you have more, it has to go through cargo. Find out from the airline about weight and charge.
- If you are traveling with children, pack an extra blanket and plenty of diapers if he/she is an infant.
- Take all required shots- Required shot is Yellow Fever. You may purchase anti-malaria tablets over the counter immediately you arrive in Ghana to prevent malaria infection.
- Pay close attention to your luggage when you arrive in Ghana. The airports are ALWAYS overcrowded with over enthusiastic people which include a few pickpockets. It is best to get ONE porter to handle all your luggage, then you may tip him/her. Inform airport security if any property is lost or stolen.
- Purchase anti-mosquito spray to use during the evenings.
- Pack mostly cool clothes, it is always extremely hot in Ghana.
- You may need to drink only purified/bottled water during the first month of your stay to prevent upset stomach.
- If you need to purchase the "cedi" upon your arrival, it is best to change from large bills, since this will fetch better exchange rates than smaller bills. Always negotiate with the exchange bureau for the best rates.
- It is best to hire a taxi for the duration of your stay in Ghana if you are staying for a while and you need to move around a lot.
- You can rent a mobile phone from most phone companies' main offices or sales agents.
- Phone cards are available from corner shops and may be used only at the phone booths.
- You do not need health insurance to visit any hospital or clinic in Ghana. Most are run on a first come, first serve basis and are pay as you go.
- Mail is delivered only to post office boxes, unless it is delivered by courier. It is safe to travel any time of the day or night.
- Please inform the airlines if you have any change of plans, there is usually a charge for changes in economy class tickets.
